Biennial in the Box

The exhibition will be held in Prague, Czech Centre Prague, Rytířská 31, Prague 1

“Biennial in the Box” is a travelling exhibition held by the Moravian Gallery in Brno in collaboration with Czech Centres, Prague. Its objective is to underline the significance and outline the history of the fifty years of the International Brno Biennial of Graphic Design, established in 1963, the most important event of its kind in the Czech Republic. The Biennial has become a renowned trademark, and is a point of intersection of artistic approaches, presented by both artists and their clients.

"Biennial in the Box" presents a selection ofover a hundred exhibits from the collections of theMoravian Gallery in Brno acquired through Biennial competitions, highlights from previous Brno Biennials from 1964 to the present. The artists taking part in the Biennial count among the legends of Czech and international graphic design. Their works went on to become visual icons of their time, convincingly conveyed through graphically impressive "words and images".

Major artists represented at the exhibition: Saul Bass, Roman Cieślewicz, Wim Crouwel, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Alan Fletcher, Adrian Frutiger, Shigeo Fukuda, Milton Glaser, Ivan Chermayeff, Seymour Chwast, Mitsuo Katsui, Herb Lubalin, Abbott Miller, Paula Scher, Ladislav Sutnar, Josef Týfa, Victor Vasarely, Andy Warhol, Tadanori Yokoo, Hermann Zapf, Andy Altmann, Ruedi Baur, Julia Hasting, Stefan Sagmeister, Ralph Schraivogel, Martin Woodtli.

Artists associated with the history of the Brno Biennial: Josef Flejšar, Robert V. Novák, Jan Solpera, Jaroslav Sůra, Rostislav Vaněk, Jan Rajlich st., Aleš Najbrt, Tomáš Machek, Alan Záruba and others.

"Biennial in the Box" showcases, alongside historical exhibits, alsowork by leading Czechgraphic designers who have taken part in the management and organisation of the event, including the creation of its visual identity, and work by graphic designerswho have enriched thejubilee 25th year of the Brno Biennial 2012 with innovative alterations.
This year's concept and visual aspect of the Brno Biennial have been created by Radim Peško, Adam Macháček, Tomáš Celizna, Adéla Svobodová, Jiří Thýn, Karel Haloun, Květa Pacovská and others.
