Adam Eck

1604 Cheb - 1664 Cheb

The beginnings of relief inlay are associated with the names of several carvers active in Cheb in the 1630’s. Adam Eck (1604-1664), from an extensive family of carvers and joiners, operating mainly in Cheb, is generally considered the founder craftsman. In 1632, he established an independent and prosperous company which produced commissions for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, famous Swedish general Wrangler and several representatives of the nobility such as the Colloredos and the Skuhrovskýs. He signed the majority of his works, either Adam Eck or Egg von Eger. His products can now be found in foreign museums and galleries. One of the best-known examples is the Passover cycle of five tablets from the Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseum.
