We would like to remind you that on 21–24 April 2010 the Moravska galerie in Brno, Czech Republic will host an international conference titled NATIONAL – INTERNATIONAL
Arts and politics in houses and interiors of the 20th century.
Is modernism an “international” phenomenon? Are there national monuments in an international style? Are there “national” styles in the 20th century, at all? Ten years after, facing globalisation, it is time to ask questions about two of the most important currents in the past century: nationalism and modernism. By tracing types of houses and rooms, the conference will address the villa as form and means of social and political representation.
A main focus will be on the relationships of central European architecture to Vienna, Berlin, Paris, London and Glasgow. For the Villa Tugendhat and the Jurkovic House in Brno as well as Josef Hoffmann’s birthplace in Brtnice set prominent examples for an opposition of “national” and “international” styles created and chosen by architects or owners. Do these styles of architecture and interior design mix at random in this region or is the choice significant for the client and the architect or designer?

Conference Fee
The conference participation fee of EUR 190 covers the following: participation in two working days of the conference (Wednesday 21 April and Thursday 22 April 2010), including interpretation, coffee breaks, conference materials; participation in the evening party with reception on Wednesday 21 April 2010; participation in the field trip on Friday 23 April 2010: Luhacovice, Zlin (including lunch).
The concession students‘ participation fee of EUR 35 covers the following: participation in two working days of the conference (Wednesday 21 April and Thursday 22 April 2010), including interpretation and coffee breaks.
The conference fee does NOT cover travelling costs, per diems and accommodation (to be taken in charge by participants themselves) and attendance to the post-conference excursion on Saturday 24 April 2010 (participation fee EUR 25).

Participants will obtain detailed information at the conference registration desk – on 20 April from 4 to 6 pm, or on 21 April from 8 to 10 am at the conference hall of the Museum of Applied Arts – Moravian Gallery in Brno, Husova 14.
