The holdings of the Moravian Gallery in Brno comprise an outstanding set of small-scale sculpture designs ascribed to one of the most important figures of late Baroque art, the Bavarian court sculptor J. B. Straub. The exhibition is the first public presentation of the set and provides an opportunity to take a backstage look into the workings of a Baroque sculpture workshop. The visit can be full of surprises even for those who otherwise prefer modern and contemporary art. Straub’s designs stand out for the expressivity of their shapes and their compactness which at first glance places them side by side with some movements in sculpture of the first half of the 20th century.
